Dr Ashok Rangarajan is an ophthalmic surgeon who is passionate about quality care, complete patient satisfaction, ethical and evidence based practice of ophthalmology. He is currently the Medical director of Centre for Eye and Health Care at Thoraipakkam (OMR), Chennai. He is also the Hon.Medical Director of Sankara Eye hospital, Chennai and a senior consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Apollo Day Surgery and Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.

Following MBBS from the University of Calcutta, and MS in Ophthalmology from PT Ravishankar Shukla University at Raipur, Dr Ashok obtained the Diplomate of the National Board of Examinations (DNB) in Ophthalmology from New Delhi. He then did a fellowship, from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, in General ophthalmology covering Glaucoma, Medical Retina, Uvea, Neuro-ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Emergency Ophthalmic services with particular focus on anterior segment surgeries and completed the Fellowship in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS). He further did a short observership in retinal vascular conditions from Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, USA and in Glaucoma from Moorfields’ Eye Hospital, London.”

Areas of Expertise and Experience

Dr Ashok Rangarajan worked as a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist in one of the premier eye institutes of the country, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai for over a decade. He was also the consultant ophthalmologist at Belhoul Apollo Hospital in Dubai, and the Director of Eye Services of the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation in Nigeria. His main areas of expertise and vast experience are cataract and refractive surgery, glaucoma surgery and combined cataract and glaucoma surgeries. These surgeries involve the use of modern technology such as cold phacoemulsification, Micro Incision Phacoemulsification (MICS) and use of techniques and lenses to give spectacle free vision post surgery. LASIK, the procedure for correction of refractive errors is another area of interest and expertise for Dr Ashok. His training and years of experience in Sankara Nethralaya has helped him in precise diagnosis and treatment of retinal conditions, especially retinal vascular conditions like diabetic retinopathy.

He has vast experience in complex and combined anterior segment surgeries and in the treatment of retinal conditions with Laser and injections. He has trained a number of ophthalmologists from across the country in the fine art of ophthalmic microsurgery.
