DR. ASHOK EYE HOSPITAL
Neuro – Ophthalmology
The eyes are the windows to the brain.
It is the brain which integrates the signals received from the 2 eyes via the OPTIC nerves to present us the image that we see.
Another set of muscles helps in the blinking action which is required for surface lubrication and protection. These movements are made possible by certain cranial nerves which travel from the back of the brain to help the muscles work.
Neuro-Ophthalmology is a challenging subspecialty which deals with neurological conditions affecting the eyes and is a combination of ophthalmology, neurology and neurosurgery.
Visual field report
From simple nonspecific twitching of the lids to double vision due to paralysis the muscle(s) to loss of vision due to inflammation of the optic nerves, this sub-specialty can throw up many a challenge and the radiologist too has a role to play here in correctly reading the images of the brain and orbit wherever required. Clinical evaluation aside, visual field testing is the most commonly performed investigation to detect neurological lesions, based on the field reports other relevant blood or imaging investigations are advised.
