Comprehensive Eye Check-up
- The first step of examining a patient is documenting a detailed history of the complaints for which the person has come to consult the doctor.
- This step is performed by a qualified Optometrist/Refractionist/Paramedical or doctor.
- The medication the person is taking and in what dosage is also noted as many drugs have an effect on the structures of the eye which may cause a visual problem if undetected.
- The details of any previous treatment to the eyes(laser or surgery) and any major systemic procedure is documented
- The details of the glasses/contact lenses that the person uses along with history of allergy if any to medication or food stuff must be mentioned
- In case of children, birth history details are noted.
- Manysystemic conditions and the medication taken for them can affect the eye, so it is very important that you mention the details of all associated conditions.
- It helps to carry all the old reports and prescriptions
Vision and Refraction
In this stage of ocular evaluation, a refraction value is taken with the help of an automated machine and then the distance and near visual acuity of each eye and then both eyes together with and without glasses(wherever applicable) is recorded. The spectacle correction is then tried, called subjective refraction to achieve the best vision with the least glass power.
- Fluctuations in blood sugar value will change the refraction status, so diabetics must ensure good control before changing glasses
- Visual acuity or vision is the amount one sees, while refraction is power of the lens in the spectacles
The pupillary reaction checked with the help of a torch light, gives a lot of information on the health of the nerve at the back of the eye.
The extra ocular movements of the eyes are synchronised movements which involve many cranial nerves and results in binocular vision and improved range of vision.
The diagnosis of squint (latent or manifest) is made through a set of tests which involve seeing the movement of the eyes.
Forward bulging of the eyes called proptosis is also detected during the external examination of the eyes.
- The external examination gives a wealth of information in diagnosing neuro-ophthalmology conditions, squint, pseudo squint, nerve palsies, thyroid eye disease, orbital tumours and much more.
Slit lamp Examination
The slit lamp helps the ophthalmologist see the front of the eye in detail with illumination and magnification. There are blue and green filters for special tests. The slit lamp is also required to measure the intraocular pressure by the Goldman Applanation Tonometry(GAT) method. With the help of special lenses the optic nerve and the macula can also be seen with or without dilatation.
Even children from the age of 3 can be examined with this equipment.
Intra Ocular Pressure Measurement
Certain structures within the eye manufacture a fluid called aqueous humour, which nourishes the structures within the anterior segment of the eye and leaves the eye through a meshwork of structures called the angle of the anterior chamber. This movement of fluid is a fine balance which results in and is required for their optimal functioning.
The normal pressure ranges from 11-20 mm of Hg.
- Raised intraocular pressure(IOP) alone does not constitute Glaucoma
- IOP may increase due to various drugs(systemic or topical)
- Patients above 40 years, hypertensives and those with family history of Glaucoma must have the IOP measured during routine eye evaluation
Fundus (Retinal ) Evaluation
The retinal evaluation is best done following pupillary dilation, which enables the examiner to see the central and the retinal periphery.
- Fluorescein staining
- Schirmer’s test
- Rose Bengal staining
- Cycloplegic Refraction
. “ I was wearing Glasses for 12 years. So I planned to do eye surgery. But afraid to do that it's safe or having any side effect and pain while doing surgery. I check in with Centre for Eye and Health Care and consult with Dr.Ashok. He helped me to understand what are the types of surgery available and zero pain. So I planned to take surgery. Still I had doubts and checked with other doctors for consulting for second opinion. But I can say confidently that Dr.Ashok is best in doctors I consulted. “. I am Asha B, residing at Sri Sai Nagar, Thuraipakkam, Chennai 600097. Right from my school days, I was wearing spectacles for my myopia problem. After completing my graduation, I consulted Dr Ashok Rangarajan, Centre for Eye and Health Care Pvt Ltd, Thuraipakkam, for Eye Lasik Surgery, since I was very uncomfortable wearing spectacles all the time. After necessary tests, I was advised by Dr Ashok Rangarajan that Lasik Surgery can be done to me. On Dec 26, 2012 Dr Ashok Rangarajan did Lasik Surgery for my both eyes. The surgery was done in a hygienic, systematic and smooth manner, without any pain to eyes. The whole procedure took only 30 min. Soon after the surgery, I was discharged and sent home. After four hours of Lasik Surgery, my vision became very clear, without spectacles. I am very much satisfied with the Lasik Surgery done by Dr Ashok Rangarajan, which involves precision and dedication. I am now free from spectacles. “I have been sporting corrective spectacles for a tad more than a decade and doctor you have been our family Ophthalmologist.Last year during our yearly check up you had mentioned that I was developing cataract in my right eye as it was not bothering my vision. In April this year with some discomfort in my eye I had come to see you and you had prescribed some drops and also mentioned that the right eye required cataract surgery soon and it was affecting vision significantly. With Covid-19 I was a bit worried with the prevailing lockdowns and the prevalence of Covid-19. Doctor assured me that maybe all of us need to learn to live with Covid-19. We agreed to get the surgery done early June 2020 and the Doctor specifically had advised multifocal lenses and he suggested that we do the surgery at Centre for Eye and Health Care Pvt Ltd., Thoraipakkam Centre. We reached the place on 5th Morning and was welcomed by the staff with a smile and we quickly registered and signed consent letter. The centre’s ambience was good, clean and well sanitized. Was taken in for surgery and in about 30 minutes later the surgery was complete and I walked out of the OT. To my utter relief I experienced no pain as promised by the highly skilled Doctor Ashok Rangarajan. I had to wait for another hour as the Doctor completed two other procedures in the theatre which incidentally was squeaky clean and just like the reception area as well. The bandage over my right eye was removed in one hour post the surgery and the Doctor checked the eye and said that the lens was in proper position. Drops were prescribed and went in for a check after 12 days and my vision was 6/6 and very clear vision was restored to my relief and satisfaction. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Ashok Rangarajan and his Centre for Eye and Health Care for all your Ophthalmic needs.”
“My experience with Centre for Eye Care @ OMR – WOW I walked into this centre through a reference in the last week of October 2019 to have preliminary idea about the Centre before deciding anything about my eyes. It was indeed a pleasant experience. Pleasant atmosphere and courteous staff gave me a good impression. Then I went to the chambers of Dr. Ashok Rangarajan, the Director and key person of the Centre. His personality and attention towards me in listening to my eye related issues convinced me at once. He thoroughly checked my eyes and advised that it was only cataract due to my age which needed surgery. Also, I had problems in reading books and newspapers for quite some time. More so, letters of small fonts posed great challenges. Both the eyes needed quick treatment and so I decided to go ahead without any further thoughts. Both my eyes were treated within a gap of 10 days. After a review post the operation, I was back home very soon.”
